Tettenhall Wood School Gets Set for A New Home

Tettenhall Wood School is the City’s designated school for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Conditions.  At present there are 58 pupils on roll, aged 6 – 19, who attend school form across the City.

Currently, 63% of pupils have a diagnosis and statement of Autistic Spectrum Conditions, the remaining 27% have Severe and Complex Learning Conditions.

Staff are eagerly awaiting the move to a new school in September 2012 which will provide all our pupils with an appropriate learning environment with a range of specialist facilities.  The most important of these will be the added space both externally and internally.

Classrooms will be considerably larger and will benefit from a break out area which will enable pupils to calm down and re-focus before rejoining the learning experience.

Swimming will continue to play an important role in the pupil’s lives and they will benefit from a new hydrotherapy pool, big enough to learn to swim in, and larger changing spaces.  In addition, a ‘Water Room’ will be available for a number of pupils who require a more sensory approach to learning.  Closely situated to this area will be a small sports area and changing rooms.  Pupils will no longer have to cut lessons short as this room will only be used for this purpose.

Specialist dining facilities will make a significant difference as will the addition of a school kitchen to prepare and serve a range of foods appropriate to the diverse range of diets that pupils have.  Traditionally, food has been prepared ‘off site’ and brought in.  Pupils will benefit from a totally new dining experience.

There will also be a specialist Art Room, Science and Food Technology, a Sensory Integration Room, Drama and Performing Arts Studio, Sensory Learning Centre and an Environmental ‘Teach and Grow’ area.  These facilities will make a significant difference to the way in which learning experiences have been delivered in our present school.

Upstairs will consist on a Training Room from which a range of inservice will be delivered.  This room will also be available for use by community groups, small businesses or professional groups.  Parents will have their own room which will be available on a daily basis.  A medical room and therapy room will provide the many professionals who visit the school with first class facilities to carry out their work with pupils.

The school’s Communication Team will also have a room as will the school’s ICT technician.  There will be a small interview room and greatly improved facilities for all staff.

As a school we are keen to welcome members of the local community and hope that when they are aware of the facilities that are on offer for their use that we will be able to forge relationships and that the school will be able to play a significant role in the Life of the local community.
